Privacy
Short version: I collect very little, I don't track you, I don't record our conversation, and I'll delete your info whenever you ask.
Who I am
This is a research project run by Shelton Davis (Empathy Lab) in Georgia, USA. Questions or requests: [email protected].
Visiting the site
- No analytics, no tracking pixels, no ad scripts, and no tracking or advertising cookies.
- Fonts are hosted on this site, so loading a page doesn't send your info to Google or anyone else.
- The site is hosted on DigitalOcean, which delivers it through Cloudflare's network. Like any web host, they may briefly keep standard technical logs (such as IP address and pages requested) to keep the site running. I don't use those logs to identify or follow anyone.
- Cloudflare sets one short-lived security cookie (
__cf_bm) to tell people apart from bots. It expires after 30 minutes and isn't used for tracking or ads. I don't set any cookies myself.
What the forms collect
| Form | What you give me |
|---|---|
| Screener | Email; first name or alias (optional); whether your divorce is final; your state; roughly when it was finalized; how it was resolved; whether kids were involved; whether you're open to a call; one optional line (280 characters max); your consent. |
| Waitlist | Email, plus whether you came from the screener because your divorce isn't final yet or you live outside the US. |
Why: to decide who to invite to a conversation, to email you about scheduling, and to tell you when tools are ready. You'll also get one automatic confirmation email from [email protected]; it doesn't repeat anything you wrote. That's it. I don't sell it, share it, or use it for marketing anything else.
Where it's stored: form submissions are processed and stored by Formspree (a US form service) and emailed to me. My email, including [email protected], is hosted on Google Workspace, so submissions and any emails between us are stored there. If we schedule a call, the scheduling happens over email.
The conversation itself
I run these conversations by a mediator's ground rules:
- No recording, no AI, no transcription. It's just you and me on a video or phone call.
- Paper notes only, handwritten during the call. The same day, I pull out the anonymous patterns and then shred the notes.
- What survives is de-identified. Patterns are written without names or identifying details, details are changed where needed, and they're combined with what I hear from many other people.
- You're in charge. Skip any question, stop at any time.
To be honest about the limits: this is research, not mediation, therapy, or legal advice, and our conversation isn't legally privileged. I'll never publish anything that identifies you.
One exception, the same one most mediators have: if you tell me someone is in immediate danger, I may act to get them help.
The pattern library
The anonymous patterns become part of a divorce pattern library used to build tools, guides, and educational material for people going through divorce. Because patterns are de-identified and combined across many conversations, they can't be traced back to you. That also means a pattern can't be pulled back out once it's merged, because there's nothing in it that's yours specifically.
How long I keep things
- Paper notes: destroyed the same day as our conversation.
- Form submissions and emails: deleted 12 months after this research phase ends, or sooner if you ask.
- Waitlist emails: kept until the tools launch or you unsubscribe, whichever comes first.
- De-identified patterns: kept as part of the pattern library.
Deleting your info
Email [email protected] from the address you signed up with and say "delete me." I'll delete your submission from Formspree and my email and confirm when it's done.
Who this is for
Interviews are for adults 18+ in the US whose divorce is final. The waitlist is open to anyone 18+.
Changes
If this page changes in a way that matters, I'll update the date at the top. If it affects how I use information you've already given me, I'll email you first.
